City in Masks: How Brisbane fought the Spanish Flu is a narrative history of this city’s encounter with the biggest killer in history. The 1919 epidemic was the deadliest disaster Brisbane ever endured. The story is, of course, dramatic and sad. It’s also inspirational: not only in terms of the heroic work done by doctors and nurses, but because hundreds of women organised themselves to help keep thousands of dangerously sick people alive by taking care of the fundamental basics of life.
Join Matthew Wengert, a historical researcher and writer with a particular interest in medical history and Queensland’s colonial frontier, as he discusses his research regarding the Spanish Flu and its arrival in Australia and the local stories that he has discovered. Matthew has also received the 2018 Brisbane City Council’s Lord Mayor’s Helen Taylor Research Award for Local History.
