August 2021
Building removal works to facilitate the Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade have commenced. Works will take place from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and are due for completion by the end of September. These works will involve temporary lane closures on Moggilll Rd and Coonan St as required.
Main construction works will commence later this year, and will take place at night. The project is due for completion in 2024.
June 2021
Council have released the final plans for the $120m Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade project with preliminary works due to commence in the coming weeks (see below). The upgrade will include the construction of a t-intersection overpass from Coonan St over Moggill Rd, and Council will maintain the existing left-turn movement from Stamford Rd and allow westbound traffic a left-turn into Stamford Rd from Moggill Rd.
Early works will involve temporary lane closures on Moggilll Rd and Coonan St as required. Main construction works will commence in late 2021, and will take place at night. The project is due for completion in 2024.
I’m still not sure this is the best design as the t-intersection overpass will stop traffic using the Coonan Rd corridor in two locations whne completed rather than the current one at the round-a-bout.
December 2019
Brisbane City Council has finally provided answers to my questions about the Moggill Rd Round-a-bout upgrade. I also met with Council’s project team to discuss the draft designs and came away with even more questions.
This is a complex project with a large number of incidental impacts for local traffic movements. You can read the answers below. Most of them are fairly generic answers. Here are some highlights (all times are estimates):
- Option A (T-intersection) – AM peak travel time – 25s slower; PM peak travel time – 12s faster;
- option B (Overpass) – AM peak travel time 8s faster; PM peak travel time – 16s faster;
- traffic signal phasing has not been determined;
- the length of the slip lane in Option B and merge control is not determined yet;
- access to the Indooroopilly strip shops will be via the McDonalds intersection (Allwood St) and Clarence Rd, as Keating St becomes left in-left out only;
- no cycling facilities;
- no decision on the future use of remnant land around the round-about site; and
- the project does not upgrade Coonan St south of the McDonalds intersection (Allwood St).
Neither Option A nor Option B have enough information yet to make an informed decision. However, Option A will make things worse for traffic using Coonan St in the AM peak by approximately 25s. Council is seeking feedback in the next few weeks. I have been advised the plan is then to choose one option and prepare a business case, with the preferred option to be released for further consultation in early 2020. It is really hard to see how this will benefit residents in the south-western suburbs other than an expected reduction in accident severity. In my view an overpass is needed, but the current draft design raises more questions than answers with so many design variables and technical issues not determined.
It is critical that you speak up now, as Council will make a decision that could adversely impact on our community for decades. Email your feedback to cityprojects@brisbane.qld.gov.au or call the project team on 1800 010 705.
