This year Council has allocated $75,000 in the Budget for a centre island pedestrian refuge on Sherwood Rd near Egmont St, Sherwood.

The refuge will provide a safe crossing point on busy Sherwood Rd for children traveling to Sherwood State School or for resident’s access local parks, shops and the nearby Oxley Creek Common.  It will provide better connectivity between Sherwood and Corinda via the Jerrold St pedestrian tunnel under Tennyson Spur Line.

The proposal will also include upgraded lighting and a request for a safety cage around the pedestrian island (similar to Graceville Ave) has also been made.

There are pros and cons to the proposal. The pros are significant including better and safer connectivity for students and local residents crossing Sherwood Rd, better access to the nominated cycling route and improved links to Strickland Terrace Park and the Oxley Creek Common. The main con or impact is the loss of on street car parking needed to achieve the 20m sightline needed on each side of the refuge.

Council has developed three options, noted below, for your consideration.

Option 1 – west of Egmont St

This is the preferred option as it has clear sight lines, provides a footpath connection in Egmont St but will result in the loss of some on street parking. No impact on lane space through traffic and vehicles vehicle turning into Egmont St.

Option 2 – between Egmont and Jerrold St

Clear sightlines, requires pedestrians and cyclists to also cross Egmont St to access the footpath, will result in the loss of some on street parking, particularly in front of the mower shop and reduced lane width.

Option 3  – east of Jerrold St

This is the least preferred option as pedestrians will be subject to through traffic on Sherwood Rd and turning traffic from Jerrold St however, the loss of on-street parking is minimised.

My main objective is to ensure the proposed refuge is practical and safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

This request has been on Council’s waiting list for approximately 10 years. Why Council has funded it above other projects of equal need in the ward is unclear but it is not often that we are allocated funding for these projects.  Other locations in Sherwood where refuges have been requested and already listed on Council’s capital works list awaiting funding are at the cnr Hedges and Skew St near Sherwood Station, Dewar Tce at Marlborough St and Honour Ave at Marlborough St.
